AbstractThe aim of this work is to evaluate the support vector machine (SVM) classifier, which is part of a theoretically superior machine learning algorithm. The area surrounding Itumbiara reservoir in the State of Goiás, Brazil, was selected as a case study to carry out the classification of a CCD CBERS-2 image. The classes were defined in accordance with the Land Cover Classification System of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as Cultivated and Managed terrestrial Areas, Natural and Semi-Natural Vegetation, Artificial Surfaces and Associated Areas, Bare Areas, and Natural and Artificial Waterbodies. Training sets were collected for each class and than the algorithm was applied. Matrix confusion and the Kappa coefficients were used to evaluate the classification algorithm. The computed accuracy was about 75% and the Kappa coefficient 60%. According to these results the optimal class separation by SVM algorithm was considered reasonable good.
